There are so many projects I have on my list and believe me each project seems to send me to my favorite stores for MORE YARN! So much yarn and so little time – True that!
Get ready my friends – this article will reveal my yarn storage issues. Proceed. With. Caution.
Yes this is some of my yarn.
I must say I have the best hubby and due to my love for yarn, he insisted when we moved into our new home that I have a “craft” room. We owned several storage cabinets and decided to repurpose the cabinets for the craft room. I immediately stored my yarn in the cabinet. The first few months I kept the cabinet in order. However, as I used portions of each skein and bought more, the cabinet got messier and messier. Basically the skeins kept falling over and falling out every time I opened the door.
I also used my closet and as you can see that was becoming a challenge as well.
HELP! I needed a yarn storage solution that would: Provide Easy Access, Be a Quick Fix, and Easy on the Pocket Book.
I shared a few ideas with my hubby and he replied with “’l’ll know it when I see it – let’s go shopping. Don’t have to tell me twice! I had something like cubes in mind but found that solution to be a bit costly. So what did we find? Moving boxes; basic, 12x12x12 cubes that cost less than a dollar per box. Score! Oh yes, we took a few measurements before the shopping trip to be clear on size and amount that would fill the cabinet.
We simply folded the box flaps inside and begin to fill the new yarn storage boxes! There was a perfect space on the top and side of each box, so I used that space for specialty yarn. After several months of use, I find that the boxes keep the yarn skeins from falling, and keep everything compact. And to top it off, I can see all my choices and can close the door to reduce dust and keep the room tidy.
Also….. I still had those pesky small skeins and yarn scraps and needed a solution to keep those contained as well. Initials Inc, has a great storage basket that closes at the top. I use this basket for my yarn scraps and color ways that I need quite often. Note: not being paid for advertising this product, as my comments are based on my personal experience.
My quick fix – simple, inexpensive cube boxes! I now have a great way to store my yarn and believe it or not – one more cabinet available for storage. Time to buy some more yarn.
I’d love to hear/see what you do for your storage. Leave a comment and let’s share our yarn storage tips.
